We as the body of Christ know how important the word of God is. And we know that a ministry of mercy is just as much a part of the body as the ministry of the word. It is not an either/or, and it is not a 70/30 or even a 60/40 in favor of the word. Mercy ministry is integral to the gospel. The gospel is the announcement that the kingdom of God has arrived. Remember that after John the Baptist had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God. Then He said that the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. And with the arrival of the kingdom is the release of the captives, the restoration of sight to the blind, and the emancipation of the oppressed. Jesus, quoting from Isaiah, says that he is the one about whom the prophet wrote: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. And when Jesus preached the gospel to the poor what did he do? Did he preach only? Absolutely not. For the kingdom of God is not a kingdom of words! It is the dynamic reign of the living and righteous Lord of the universe.
Our community development program focuses on integrating personal and career development. Most of our men come from treatment centers and the penal system, so we center on bridging a gap between community and the consequences of dependency.
Times have changed and most doctors have stopped making house calls, but not the community developers. We have trained skilled handymen ready to come into the local community to do whatever is need. All we do is initiated from one call, The Lords! When our handymen are used around the community, you don't need to call in several craftsmen to do the odd jobs — our handymen can do everything as quickly and efficiently, and most times in one trip. Praise God for His gifts and the talents he provides!
It is important to carefully consider our Maker and the values that He initiates for several reasons: (1) they guide our lives minute by minute toward noble goals, rather than our lives being controlled by self-serving motives, customs, accidental occurrences, bad habits, impulses, or emotions. We have to know where we are going before we can get there. (2) Values and morals can not only guide but inspire and motivate us, giving energy and a zest for living and for doing something meaningful and serving for Someone meaningful. (3) Sensitivity to our failure to live up to our basic values: may lead to unproductive guilt or it can lead to a more constructive dissatisfaction, which motivates us to improve. (4) High values and some success meeting those goals are necessary for intended value. (5) Professed but unused values are worthless or worse--phony goodness and rationalizations for not changing. We must be honest with ourselves, recognizing the difference between pretended (verbalized) values and operational (acted on) values. Of course, no one lives up to all their ideals, but values that only make us look or feel good (including being religious) and do not help us act more morally must be recognized as self-serving hypocrisy.
